چکیده

rhizomania is one of the most important sugar beet diseases in iran and some other parts of the world. in this study, the infection rate of the most important weeds of sugar beet fields under natural condition  to the causal agent of the bnyvv (beet necrotic yellow vein virus) disease  was investigated at fars agricultural research center , iran. roots were collected from the infected weeds and bnyvv detection was carried out using elisa test. among the studied weeds, the highest rate of infection was detected in wild beet, beta vulgaris subsp. maritima and for the rest of weeds including amaranthus retroflexus, portulaca oleracea, chenopodium album, solanum nigrum, convolvulus arvensis, hibiscus trionum, and heliotropium europaeum no infection was detected. b. maritima seedlings were planted in infected soil in the greenhouse, and after two months, systemic leaf symptoms including mosaic, vein yellowing, short bunchy habit of growth (rosette), and severe stunting were observed. mechanical inoculation of bnyvv to b. maritima plants resulted in the emergence of disease symptoms. upon the inoculation of infected b. maritima leaves on  the three susceptible sugar beet cultivars (ic, pp8, and 7233 cultivars), yellow local and necrotic lesions were observed. the virus concentration in b. maritima was higher than the three aforementioned cultivars. this is for the first time to detect bnyvv in b. maritima and report it as a systemic host for bnyvv in iran. compared with other weeds grown in areas infected to rhizomania, this population of b. maritima (accession number 8901) had higher inoculums increment ability in the soil.

Interactions Between Beet necrotic yellow vein virus and Beet soilborne mosaic virus in Sugar Beet

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) and Beet soilborne mosaic virus (BSBMV) are members of the genus Benyvirus (9). Both viruses infect members of the family Chenopodiaceae, most notably sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.), and are transmitted by the plasmodiophorid, Polymyxa betae (1,2). BNYVV infection causes rhizomania disease in sugar beet (4,21); however, BSBMV infection does not (28). BSBMV...

Suppression of Resistance-Breaking Beet necrotic yellow vein virus Isolates by Beet oak-leaf virus in Sugar Beet

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) is a member of the genus Benyvirus (21,22) and causes the disease known as rhizomania. It often is reported to be the most important sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) virus (17). BNYVV is transmitted by the plasmodiophorid, Polymyxa betae Keskin (1,2,6). In the United States, the virus first was identified in California in 1984 (5) but now occurs in every maj...

Nucleotide Sequence of Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus RNA-2

The complete nucleotide sequence of beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) RNA-2 has been determined from a study of cloned cDNA. The RNA sequence is 4612 nucleotides in length, excluding the poly(A) tail. There are six long open reading frames (ORFs) in the sequence. The viral coat protein cistron is the ORF nearest to the 5' terminus and the coat protein amber termination codon is followed b...

Molecular Biology of the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus

Beet necrotic yellow vein virus is the etiological agent of one of the most devastating sugar beet viral diseases: rhizomania. This review describes the molecular biology of the rhizomania disease, the functions of the BNYVV encoded proteins, the consequences of their expression as well as the biology of the BNYVV vector, Polymyxa betae. Root proliferation is an important part of the well-known...
